This is a misnomer. It is both a pedestrian and a bike path although not a few cyclists seem to be cognizant of the rules on this path.
Work began in 1858 but was halted during the Civil War and resumed in 1865. It was completed in 1878 and dedicated on May 25, 1879. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
A short tour of the glorious art (24k gold mosaic) and stunning architecture of this church is given immediately after the Sunday 11am service.

Go in the winter the birds are hungry and sometimes the chipmunks will also come out and eat seeds from your hands.
We went to the bakery down the street and ate some yummy donuts and coffee and enjoyed the beautiful view. Great way to start the day - highly recommended.
