Smith & Mills is one of my favorite places in the city. Better to go earlier in the evening (or on a weekend or on an off-night). Otherwise, the tiny spot is packed+loses charm
The drinks are a bit on the sweet side -- and there's proseco on tap if that's your jam -- but it has a chill vibe in the back of an art gallery that's a great reprieve from the rest of the LES.

Call well in advance to reserve the Naked Lady Room, a private dining room behind a fake wall. With space for up to 6 people, it features exposed brick, a big chandelier & naked lady wallpaper.
There is no formal cocktail list, but the bartender asks the type of spirit you like & if you like your drinks sweet, sour, etc. Then he creates a custom cocktail for you.
A secluded sushi nook with only 12 seats. It has no sign on the street, and no door of its own; you enter through Bouley's Brushstroke. Call ahead for reservations.
