The Washington Monument was formally dedicated on February 22, 1885, and at the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in the world; it remains the tallest stone structure in the world.
Designed by John Russell Pope, the Memorial was built between 1939 and 1943. The bronze statue of Jefferson, added in 1947, is 19ft tall and weighs 10,000lbs.

The garden is a living plant museum & was established by Congress in 1820. The Conservatory reopened in Dec 2001 after a four-year renovation,with approx 4,000 seasonal, tropical & subtropical plants.
Since its outside the butterflies are free to roam. See exotic ones inside the Musuem in the pavilion. FREE ON TUESDAY! Come early
Stop in one of the gift shops and get the audio tour of the park. It's well worth the $10 for the CD. Also, be prepared to give it a full day. If you plan on hiking, be smart, wear sturdy.
From Hawksbill Gap lot, easiest (not shortest) way up is the spur trail at the very north end of the parking lot then left at the AT, then left at Salamander Trail. (See the posted map.)
Completed in 1908, the station was the largest train station in the world at the time it was built. In fact, if put on its side, the Washington Monument could lay within the confines of the station.
