This cemetery’s most famous resident is Karl Marx. In 1970 it became the scene of a mass hunt for the ‘Highgate Vampire’, sparked by local rumours of supernatural activity.

On this site once stood the grand home of Prime Minister Lord Shelburne. In one of its rooms in 1782 he negotiated a treaty with Benjamin Franklin that ended the American War of Independence.
This was the site of London’s infamous Tyburn gallows, where criminals were publicly hanged between 1400 and 1783. Hangings were popular spectacles with a carnival atmosphere!
Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club opened on nearby Gerrard St in 1959, moved here in 1965 and is now the most famous jazz club in Britain. Jimi Hendrix’s played his last public performance here in 1970.
Opening in 1797, this is the oldest book shop in Britain and once stocked the country house libraries of Britain’s aristocrats. Byron, Wellington, Disraeli and Wilde were all regular customers.
The attic of 22 Frith St was once the laboratory of inventor John Logie Baird. In 1925 a passing officer-worker was asked for help, and found himself making history as the first person on television!
This street’s connection with printing goes back to 1500, when a press was set up here by William Caxton’s apprentice. The world’s first daily paper, the Daily Courant, was printed here from 1702.
Geoffrey Chaucer, author of The Canterbury Tales- the first great work in English, was born here in 1343.
Buildings of the old Dominican friary were converted into London’s first covered theatre here in 1596 by James Burbage. Shakespeare lived next door, and almost certainly performed here.
This crossing has the distinction of being London’s ‘least remarkable bridge’! It retains the pale blue colour scheme it had when it opened 1940, as camouflage against German air attack.
