Best dive bar in des Moines. Not for the weak suburbanites, however. Stick to west Glen if you want a "classy" bar. Tip your bartenders well and you'll get better service. Duh.
Small bar that's always completely packed in the winter, so come during summer to spill out onto the porch. Checkers boards in the booths inside if you happen to snag one!

It's cash only and probably not a place you'd take your parents, but it's a great punk bar with affable bartenders and hilarious bathroom graffiti (you can borrow a Sharpie from the bartender).
Text the bar to order, colorful lighting, feels like the Havana scene in Guys and Dolls. Kitschy funky decor, warm, lively. The music is so good, and the leopard print pool table in the back is 👌👌

Friendliest bar in town, I love taco Tuesdays and soul music Sundays myself, but they have stuff going on every night.
The chili cheese tots are the ideal way to end any night. Or begin. Or smack dab in the middle. Or even not at night. Or any time really. What I'm saying is they're really really good.
