Fort Rotterdam was a Dutch fort built in Makassar. It was originally known as Ujung Pandang, named after the screwpine pandanus pal which grew in the region and was used for making mats.

Prince Diponegoro is a great national hero comes from Yogyakarta. However, the land of Java doesn't “have” him, since the body of the man who led the Java War (1825-30) was buried here in Makassar.
