Augustus dedicated the Vatican obelisk in Alexandria to the memory of Julius Caesar. In 37 Caligula decorated the stadium by the Vatican Hill, finished by Nero, probably the spot of Peter's martyrdom.
Brought to Rome in 10 BC by Augustus with the Solare & put on the spina of Circus Maximus with the Lateranense, it was erected by Sixtus V in 1589 on pzza del Popolo; Valadier added a fountain in 1820
One of a pair with the Matteiano, it was found on the grounds of the Iseum near the church of San Macuto in 1373, where it was re-erected, untill Clemens XI put it in front of the Pantheon in 1711.
Brought to Rome by Augustus in 10 BC together with the Flaminio, it was erected as the gnomon of the Solarium Augusti in Campus Martius. Pius VI Braschi put in on piazza Montecitorio in 1792.
Highest of Roman obelisks, put on the spina of Circus Maximus with the Flaminio in 357, it was erected by Sixtus V in front of S. Giovanni in Laterano in 1588, replacing the statue of Marcus Aurelius.
The obelisk, found in the Iseum here, was erected on an elephant by Bernini, as an emblem of the wisdom of pope Alexander VII Chigi. In the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, an elephant carries an obelisk.
Brought from Heliopolis with the Macuteo to the Iseum, it stood near the Campidoglio until Michelangelo's renovation. In 1582 donated to Ciriaco Mattei, who put it up in what is now villa Celimontana.
Found in 1883 by Lanciani near the Iseum, it was erected in front of Termini as a monument to the fallen soldiers of the Battle at Dogali (Ethiopia) in 1887. It was moved in 1924, due to renovations.
In 1586 Sixtus V Peretti had Fontana move the monolith to the front of the basilica. He used the foundations of the ancient Circus of Gaius, thus almost, but not entirely, aligning it with St Peter's.
The obelisk, called Agonale after the stadion, is a Roman copy commissioned by Domitian, moved by Maxentius to his Circus. Erected on top of the Fontana dei 4 Fiumi by Bernini in 1651 for Innocent X.
Originally from the Mausoleum of Augustus, paired with the Esquiline obelisk. Found in 1527, it was erected by Pius VI in 1786 on the piazza in front of the papal summer palace, Palazzo Quirinale.
Originally erected on the western flank of the Mausoleum of Augustus, paired with the Quirinale obelisk. In 1587 by Sixtus V Peretti set behind Santa Maria Maggiore at the end of his Strada Felice.
Made by Aurelian as a copy of the Flaminio for the Circus Sallustianus. Found by Sixtus V, moved by the Ludovisi to San Giovanni in Laterano in 1734, but kept horizontal. Erected in 1789 by Pius VI.
The obelisk was put up by Valadier on the Pincian in 1822; it is a Roman copy made by Hadrian for the tomb of Antinous in Tivoli, whence Elagabal moved it ca 220 to a circus outside the Porta Maggiore
Two Egyptian obelisks were commissioned in 1842 by Alessandro Torlonia for the gardens of the villa along via Nomentana, dedicated to the memory of his father Giovanni, who had started the building.
