The Common was used for public hangings up until 1817. In early 1965, 100 people gathered here to protest the Vietnam War, & speeches have been given here by Martin Luther King Jr & Pope John Paul III
On Nov. 7, 1979, Faneuil Hall was the site of Sen. Edward Kennedy's speech declaring his candidacy for president. On Nov. 3, 2004, Faneuil Hall was the site of Senator John Kerry's concession speech.
