Keep a tourist map only as a back-up. There's a certain magic to wandering the intricate nooks and crannies of the city and stumbling on restaurants and hidden gem stores you wouldn't find usually.
Tip: tickets from Mestre Station to other destinations in Italy are way cheaper... And Mestre is just 10min from S. Lucia station - use green colored local train (RGV), ticket 1.2€

Buses cost 6 euros whatever your destination. Make sure you don't buy the ticket from actv. It takes 45 minutes to go to Mestre train station vs 15 minutes with atvo for the same price
