A beautiful monument of the history of the city, and an excellent place to pray.
Beautiful former bank building that now hosts a library and exhibition space. Loved the exhibition about Turkey's 8 neighbours. Free entrance.
This significant complex is home to 3 centers: the Archeology Museum, the Tiled Kiosk of Sultan Ahmet and the Museum of the Ancient Orient. They provide a rich collection of a long period of time.
Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnici) is a historic water cistern constructed by the Byzantine Empire. Engraved decorations exist over some of its 336 columns. It has a capacity of 80.000 m3 water.
Right across from the cistern is the greatest single building in a city full of wonders, the Hagia Sophia or Aya Sofya (£8.70, closed Mondays). It was a church, then a mosque and is now a museum.
Both kids and adults will love this toy museum. Filled with more than 4,000 old and new displays, this place is where you'll learn about the significance and language of different types of toys.

A great branch of this famous museum. It was big enough and some famous local people were added to the previous collection.
Learn about the Turkish military history, see exhibits of items from the Ottoman era, watch the Mehter (world's oldest military band) play every afternoon. Opens from 9-5, closed Mondays & Tuesdays.
A lovely museum on the history of Istanbul. Get an audio guide, and a camera. The panorama dome is incredible.
