Good food in Singapore

Kars Alfrink: All the cooking is done on a charcoal stove. If you want to feel like you've gone back to the Singapore of 20 years ago, come for a kopi and kaya toast here.

Kars Alfrink: This place operates like Swiss clockwork. Hygiene is impeccable, service is fast but friendly and the food: wow. My Mysore style masala dosa was crazy tasty. I could have easily gone for seconds.

Kars Alfrink: Delightful if humble fare with good vegetarian options. We had daal and aloo matta with our chapati. Cost next to nothing.

Kars Alfrink: Very attractive hawker center with some seriously great food on offer. I could have kept going back to the char siew stall for more. The teochew kueh is a flavorful if oily treat.

Kars Alfrink: Oh boy this place offers huge value. The food is super tasty, portions are generous and the atmosphere is very local. I had a rice meal. I want to go again.

Kars Alfrink: OMG their naan fresh from the tandoor is the best.

Kars Alfrink: A spacious, breezy and clean center in a suburban setting with lots of great food. Enjoyed the sliced fish soup, prawn mee and carrot cake. Will be coming back to sample more.

Kars Alfrink: Very legit. Recommended dishes to try in the evening include satay, char kway teow and oyster omelette. I'm told the rojak is also crazy good.

Kars Alfrink: Delightful setting for a hawker center. I was here for a weekday lunch and it was quiet. I'm sure dinners and weekends are a different story. Check out Roxy (#01-48) for an interesting take on laksa.

Kars Alfrink: Cafeteria style udon and tempura. Great for a quick meal. Noodles are nice and chewy, tempura are nice and crispy.

Kars Alfrink: I'm conservative so went for the winter ramen (the most traditional of the four options) and added all the extras. Broth is super rich and toppings are very nice. Cheerful staff, cheerful interior.

Kars Alfrink: Hong Kee Beef Noodle at #01-42 is a huge rec. Juicy beef, chewy noodle, hearty broth. Michelin-recognized to boot!

Kars Alfrink: The dumplings at #01-31 Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao are crazy good.

Kars Alfrink: Old school and unpolished. Fast service and loud dance pop music. Probably my favorite Korean BBQ place on this street.

Kars Alfrink: My favorite place to have dim sum. Huge, lively, Spartan interior, blistering service and delectable food. Cheap too so you can pig out w/o breaking the bank. Always a queue but it's worth the wait.

Kars Alfrink: If you're in for something filling get the Ma Bo Lor Mee. A sticky, spicy thick brothed noodle dish. I added fried fish to mine for some extra protein.

Kars Alfrink: Braised duck rice, carrot cake and prawn mee (see separate tip) are all very good here.

Kars Alfrink: This place is so huge, a man with an appetite can get in serious trouble here.

Kars Alfrink: Had a pho bo dac biet and thoroughly enjoyed it. Spring rolls (goi cuon) also nice. My dining company was enthusiastic about the bun thit nuong cha gio. Only downside was slightly flaky service.

Kars Alfrink: I still have dreams of the laksa I once had here. I think it's the best I've tasted yet in SG.

Kars Alfrink: The nasi lemak at Hi Leskmi (#01-24) is super comforting.

Kars Alfrink: The set meals are tasty and a steal. Mine was a saba shioyaki and it made me very happy.

Kars Alfrink: Love that they still use charcoal for the steamboat. We were a party of four and ordered the pomfret along with a few extras and had quite the feast.

Kars Alfrink: The Nagoya style mazesoba is pretty damn tasty.

Kars Alfrink: I could have lunch here every day. Excellent gyoza and too many great sides to choose from.

Kars Alfrink: Nice atmosphere, great for breakfast or lunch after exploring Pulau Ubin. Had the chicken chop from Amigo (#01-34) and wasn't disappointed.

Kars Alfrink: The tori miso ramen has a crazy rich broth. You'll want to take a nap after.

Kars Alfrink: Go mutton biryani or go bust. Service is so brisk it's not exactly a great place for a relaxed meal but I do keep returning for the food.

Kars Alfrink: Gets pretty fucking busy during weekday lunch hour. For good reason. The wantan mee at stall 48 is indeed the bees knees.

Kars Alfrink: Generous serving of pork ribs and broth is nice and strong. Thicker than the one at Founder down the road. Hard to say which one I prefer.

Kars Alfrink: Many great food options here. I have to go again. Lucky Wanton Noodle really did make me fee lucky. Also spotted ginger chicken soup and ginormous es kacang.

Kars Alfrink: Legit and comparatively affordable shabu shabu. We were two persons and went for the pork/wagyu buffet set and left satisfied and in good spirits, in no small part due to the cozy atmosphere.

Kars Alfrink: Excellent cakes. Worth a detour. What else can I say?

Kars Alfrink: If you can get over the fact that they're huge sea snails, the abalone noodles are quite a treat.

Kars Alfrink: A cozy suburban hawker center that gets pretty crowded and during weekday lunch hour. Had a very satisfying, spicy and cheap bowl of laksa here.

Kars Alfrink: The eponymous pork chop is lean and tender and has a nice crispy crust. Affordable too. I say go.

Kars Alfrink: The mutton biryani I ordered nearly killed me, it was that generous. Good thing I also ordered buttered naan. 😵

Kars Alfrink: Generous portions and very tasty. I had the duck rice. Worth queueing for.

Kars Alfrink: Affordable authentic Japanese bar food. We had delicious sashimi and kushiyaki accompanied by a couple of draft Sapporo and went home satisfied and not-broke.

Kars Alfrink: If you feel like splurging, treat yourself to a 12 SGD pork ribs and prawn mee soup. I had mine with the noodles on the side and was one happy camper.

Kars Alfrink: I did what some tipsters here suggest and got the ajitama ramen and an order of gyoza. I wasn't sorry.

Kars Alfrink: Singapore-style ramen. Sounds like a ridiculous idea but turns out to be very tasty and value for money.

Kars Alfrink: Huge range of reportedly handmade yong tau foo. I usually pile up a plate with veggies and fresh (non fried) options and just ask for soup. Probably one of the healthiest hawker meals you can have.

Kars Alfrink: Not my favorite burger place in SG but a close second to Omakase. Portions are just right, taste is correct. Quick too so good for lunch.

Kars Alfrink: The local friend who brought me here insisted on sharing a ginger spring onion frog claypot. Surprisingly tasty when paired with a rice porridge.

Kars Alfrink: Unremarkable kopitiam with one exception: there is an excellent yong tau foo stall in here.

Kars Alfrink: I've tried a couple of branches now and the experience has always been good. Quality food at reasonable prices. Great place to get into dim sum if you're a newbie.

Kars Alfrink: Great for cheap Indian food. Allaudin's biryani is generous and tasty.

Kars Alfrink: If you're new to bingsu (Korean shaved ice desert), this is a great place to be initiated. It's huge too so great if you're with a group. Dishes can be shared.

Kars Alfrink: My cheese burger was damn juicy and very tasty. Appreciated I could order it rare. If and when I crave a burger again I know where I will be going. Namely, here.
