Christchurch doesn't offer many accommodation options nowadays and this is a cool place to crash for the night.Shared facilities are a bit spartan.
Not much to do here, but the connecting taxi and shuttle services to and from any TranzScenic route are useful. No ATM :-/
Souvenirs are available here. However, take a walk around the town: it's pleasant.
At 700m it's the highest train station in New Zealand. The Tranzalpine stops here for 10 minutes allowing tourists to take pictures and stretch legs.
Beautiful salt lake. Make sure you enjoy it even if only from the Coastal Pacific train
Not very exciting station. Some touristic info are available and a Subway sandwich shop.

Must do in Wellington. You will probably walk down through the Botanical Gardens so you won't need a return ticket.
I loved it, very much. Both the building and the exposition. The small documentary about LGBT in NZ is a gem.

If the big blue bucket happens to tip just as you're passing, be sure to make a wish.
No matter what you order, make sure you round it out with a basket of curly fries and a jug of margaritas.
Beautiful design hotel. I loved every detail! Although my room didn't have a nice view. Breakfast buffet is ok.
