This Park was created when 7th Ave was extended below 14th st in the 1920s. The West Village wasnt originally affected by the 1811 Commissioners Plan to create a grid in NYC.
This park is a triangle because two of the sides (Gansovort St and Greenwich Ave) were formerly Native American footpaths used to get to a trading post on the Hudson River.

Built as a U.S. military fort in 1811 in anticipation of the War of 1812 against the British, Castle Clinton went on to serve a variety of roles.
In 1923 they decided to extend 6th Ave South in order to accommodate traffic from the Holland Tunnel, where the original Pompeii church was. Father Demo got the money to move the church!
Over 20k people were buried at this location in the early 1800s during the Yellow Fever Epidemic. Some bodies had to be moved when they were digging the foundation for The Washington Arch.
During the Battle of Brooklyn, 260 Maryland troops held off more than 2,000 British soldiers so that the rest of the Continental Army could retreat over the Gowanus. Less than a dozen survived.
In 1794 the City Council changed the name of places w/ British names in order to reflect independence. The name of Abingdon Square was preserved, because the Abingdons sympathized with the Americans.
This house is 9.5 ft wide on the outside and 8.5 ft wide on the inside. It was built in 1873 in the former carriage entranceway of #75 and #77.
David Hess owned a 5 story apartment here that was taken from him by eminent domain in order to widen 7th Avenue in the 1910s. In 1928 Hess' children discovered that they still owned this triangle.

Dedicated to raising awareness of the Great Irish Hunger that killed up to a million in Ireland between the years 1845 and 1852. The memorial was dedicated on July 16, 2002.

This park was supposed to be named after the mayor of NYC, but the mayor didn't show up to the naming ceremony, so they named it after 2 locals that died in WWI
The organ, built in 1868, is the only organ of its size still working and in its original acoustical space. The pipes are up to 25 feet tall and were voiced specifically for the cathedral.
