North Beach is the Italian neighborhood in San Francisco and still maintains that European feel today. Here are some of the best places to visit while here.
Carolyn: For over 75 years this restaurant has been owned by the same family and has been serving up great pizza and Italian dishes. They don't take reservations, but the wait is well worth it!
Carolyn: A great cafe overlooking Washington Square Park. Grab an outside table on a warm day and watch the world go by. Before ordering, check the specials blackboard. There's also live music most evenings.
Carolyn: Bookstores don't get any better than this! Founded in San Francisco in 1953 during the Beat Era, it contains three floors of books, all housed in an historic building.
Carolyn: The best coffee shop in North Beach, run by a very friendly staff. The espresso drinks are well made, and the pastries and sandwiches are delicious. Seating is available inside and out.

Carolyn: Walk up Russian Hill from North Beach about three or four blocks, and you'll come to these famous wooden steps that were featured in the PBS version of Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City."

Carolyn: A museum dedicated to the Beat Generation, which grew right here in North Beach. A fantastic collection of Beat memorabilia that will take you back to this important time in literary history.
Carolyn: A tiny restaurant run by two sisters from Italy. Everything on the small menu is delicious. Don't miss the pesto pizza or the roast of the day. Well worth the time you'll likely have to wait in line!
Carolyn: Owned by filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, this cozy cafe serves up simple, hearty Italian food. Many of the wines poured here come from Francis Cord Coppola's vineyward, and movie memorabilia abounds!

Carolyn: The heart of North Beach, in the shadow of Sts. Peter and Paul Church. A great place to hang out, sip a coffee, and people watch. There are also regular art shows here.
