Ask your bartender about their seasonal brews, which can differ significantly from what they distribute to bars around the rest of NYC.
My favorite pairing is their dark beers with a simple order of beer pretzels and mustard (or cheese). Makes for an especially tasty happy hour snack!

Go to Gordon Biersch and try out two beers off their extensive menu, one of them being the seasonal beer.
Heartland has a few locations around NYC, although this is the only one with a working brewery inside. The food here is also quite tasty, and might be a good restaurant to take friends to after work.
The menu at Schlafly is changing constantly, but I'm a big fan of their bar food, and their veggie burgers in particular.

The first US location of a small chain of Irish brewpubs. In addition to pouring their house beers (brewed in Ireland), they boast an excellent American craft beer selection, too.
Go to McSorley's and order Dark or Light beer. Have your friend order the other type. They come in sets of two half-pint glasses, so trade a beer with your friend and try both!
One of my favore micro-brewers in Kentucky, makes its of beer in house. This brewpub also has tasty food to pair with their craft beer.
